Grassroots Concept to City Tradition
The Noche de Altares festival started out in 2002 as a tiny local initiative of the El Centro Cultural de Mexico of Santa Ana. An effort to save the Mexicans traditions, the foundation exhibited a small beginning, but soon became of the most looked forward cultural events in Southern California. This vision was quite straightforward but strong one as it aimed to unite people in front of the altars that reverence loved ones, cultural heritage, and solve the existing social challenges.
Childhood: 2002-2010
The Noche de Altares evolved during its initial ten years, through mouth to mouth publicity and local patronage. These initial festivals were celebrated in small community arenas and only had a few altars. Nevertheless, even at that the occasion was remarkable due to its authenticity and the spirit of a community. Community families, schools and grass roots groups donated to the altars and the performance and each year more visitors came with a desire to see the beauty and depth of the Dia de los Muertos traditions.
Growth and Acknowledgement: 2011-2019
The extension of the festival increased with the growth of its population within Santa Ana as well as an increase in the momentum of cultural programming. Noche de Altares became so popular and was by the mid-2010s drawing thousands of people and even forced the closure of streets. More altars and performance stations were set and merchants within the region came to perform. The festival was now a whole-day event that included music, food, workshops and art- but still remained a rooted event of remembrance and reflection.
Surviving in the Times of Uncertainty: 2020-2021

The Coronavirus and COVID-19 caught up with me in 2020 and the actual celebration was put on hold, and a smaller virtual offering was provided to the community. It was quieter along the streets but the soul of the event remained online social gathering, such as digital altars, virtual performances and storytelling.
The festival resumed with restrictions in 2021, after going ahead with capacity restrictions and health guidelines. These years were a reminder to the organizers as well as to the attendees that community and tradition can not only survive, but it can persevere even in periods of distance and disruption.
A Revival of Total Celebration: 2022-2024
Noche de Altares has its 20 th anniversary in 2022. It was a reviver year, not only a milestone year. The festival later came back on a larger scale to provide even more altars, performances and travelers than before. It was a great way to be reminded about the need to gather, remember, and celebrate. This energy was carried on into the 2023 and 2024 versions, which saw an increase in the number of community partnerships and cemented a notion of the festival as a cultural anchor and a shifting arena of discussion and creation.

With the Noche de Altares festival carrying on into the future its mission is unchanged- it is to carry honor to those that went before and it is with the bridging of the generations that share a cultural memory that this was made to happen.
